The inaugural TPSLD Sensitivity Day, held in April 2009, at Frenchtown Elementary School in Trumbull, hoped to foster positive attitudes and promote empathy among classmates. It was designed to enable students to experience a variety of physical and learning disabilities that impact a student’s every-day life, increasing awareness and sensitivity in a safe environment.
Programs began in the classrooms with discussion of differences, tolerance and the importance of being open and sensitive in our diverse world. Guest readers, including our own Ms. Laura, Ms. Stefanie and Ms. Deborah, shared grade-appropriate books geared to illustrate various differences in a positive way.
Two of the hands-on learning stations visited by all the Frenchtown students featured TLTC staff. Dr. Randy offered the students an opportunity to view life through someone else’s visually impaired eyes. Ms. Maybette’s social skills station emphasized how to best interact with other students.
Hopefully students came away with new or improved skills necessary to build and maintain relationships with children of all abilities after participating in Sensitivity Day. It certainly was TLTC’s pleasure to make a contribution to the efforts celebrating diversity and respecting differences with all students.
